Discipline - Be Responsible - Be Respectful - Be Ready

All students have the right to education, basic security and due process.  Any action that is disruptive to the educational process and/or threatens the safety and well-being of students, faculty or staff will not be tolerated.   Consequences may include:  removal from classroom, notification of parents, loss of privileges, detention, suspension, or expulsion.  At the beginning of each school year, parents and students are provided with an individual student handbook which more completely outlines specific building expectations in conduct.  Parents should review these materials with their child.  Parents are notified of disciplinary actions and may appeal suspensions and expulsions to the Superintendent and finally to the Board of Education.

Please note the following general rules and review them with your child:

  • No tobacco products, drugs or drug paraphernalia or alcohol or look-alikes may be used or brought upon school property.
  • Suspected possession of contraband materials including weapons, which includes but is not limited to knives, guns, etc., is grounds for principals or designees to conduct reasonable search and seizure upon students, their lockers and desks.
  • The District will, as required by law, report incidents of possession or use of weapons, possession of controlled substances and commission of a forcible felony to law enforcement agencies.
  • Students are expected to wear attire appropriate to learning and school activities.
  • All gang activities are prohibited. These include solicitation for membership, the wearing, displaying or distribution of gang associated items, use or display of gang speech and gestures, intimidation and extortion of others, and other acts in violation of school rules.
  • The possession or use by pupils on school property of two-way communication equipment, such as radios and pagers, is prohibited at all times.  The principal may authorize exception to this policy in cases of individual short-term pupil need for emergency communications.  Students may possess cellular or wireless telephones for use outside of school; however, these items must be turned off and may not be carried by the student during the school day.  Items will be confiscated and held until they can be returned to a parent/guardian.  Use of a cellular telephone device to chat, cheat, signal others, or otherwise violate student conduct rules is prohibited.  The school assumes no responsibility for the security of these items.  The administration may require that any visitor discontinue use of such equipment if it is disruptive to school activities.
  • Student violence and/or threat of student violence against any student, district staff member, and/or district property will not be tolerated. Students violating any provision of this policy will be subject to appropriate discipline up to and including suspension and expulsion. Additionally, cases may be referred to the police for prosecution.
  • Any teacher, other certificated employee, or any other person, whether or not certificated, providing a related service for or with respect to a student, may use reasonable force as needed to maintain safety for students, school personnel or other persons or for the purpose of self-defense or the defense of property.
The above list is a brief summary of certain disciplinary infractions and disciplinary guidelines. The administration and Board may discipline any other gross disobedience or misconduct, however, and may impose any level of discipline appropriate to the circumstances, up to and including expulsion, even if such discipline is different than that stated in this Handbook.

District and school policies and procedures on discipline are available for review in every school office and the District Office.
