 Teacher Comments:

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

This section of the report card is one tool used in District 68 to communicate with parents and students about the achievement of and progress toward the Illinois English Language Development Standards. This area identifies a student's current level of performance, including strengths and areas where additional instruction, time, and effort are needed.

English learners communicate for Social and Instructional Purposes within the school setting, and communicate information, ideas, and concepts for academic success in the content area of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Performance criteria measures at three levels of language use (word/phrase level, sentence level, and discourse level) and three features of academic language (linguistic complexity, language forms and conventions, and vocabulary usage.)

PERFORMANCE LEVEL DESCRIPTORS FOR ELL
6    Reaching   Independent use of academic language in the content areas; communication in English in all language domains is comparable to fluent peers.
5    Bridging   Frequent use of academic language in the content areas; communication in English is almost comparable to fluent peers.
4    Expanding   General use of academic language in the content areas; communication in English has few errors that do not get in the way of meaning.
3    Developing   Use of some general language in the content areas; communication has errors that may get in the way of the meaning. When communication is
 supported, meaning is understandable.
2    Beginning   Use of general vocabulary/phrases and has limited use of content area language; communication typically has errors and may not be understandable,
  even when supported.
1    Entering   Uses pictures/single words to communicate learning in the content areas; communication occurs when support is given.
