The Dolphin Digest

February 6, 2026
The exterior of Devonshire School on a sunny day.

Dear Families,

February is here, and we were able to go outside for recess most of the week. Many students were able to wrap up ACCESS testing this week as well. We had many other highlights this week, and one moment that will surely be a hit is tonight's annual Frosty Fiesta. We hope all can come and enjoy the festivities.

Reminder that we are outdoors for recess and during arrival and dismissal unless the "feels like" temperature is below 15 degrees. This means cold-weather clothing is required (boots, snow pants, a hat, gloves, and jackets). Please reach out to your teacher if you need winter clothing. Click here for more information regarding district weather policies and procedures.

Please read below for details about some of our upcoming events and opportunities.

Frosty Fiesta Date Change

Due to the inclement weather, the Frosty Fiesta has been moved to February 6th, from 6:00 p.m - 8:00 p.m. Parents must stay at the event with children!

2nd Grade Musical

Please join us for the 2nd grade musical on February 12 at 6 p.m.

Parent-Teacher Conferences 2/13 and 2/19

Parent-Teacher conferences are a great time to learn more about how your child is doing at Devonshire and to connect with your teacher. The dates for Parent Teacher conferences are February 13th from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and February 19th from 4:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. You will receive more information from your child's teachers in the next two weeks.

5 Essential Survey for Students

A student survey that will be administered at your child’s school called the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This is the thirteenth year the Illinois State Board of Education will implement this survey across the state. This survey is based on 30 years of research at the University of Chicago Consortium on School Research. It asks students about their experiences in school, giving school leaders critical student input to help develop school improvement plans.

Student participants will be required to log in using their state student ID and birth date in order to complete the survey. Students’ identities will be completely confidential. Teachers or administrators will never see individual responses to survey questions and will only receive aggregated information, such as the total percentage of students who agree that homework assignments help them learn the course material.

Please be aware that under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your student(s). Survey questions can be found on the UChicago Impact Support Center (https://help.5-essentials.org/s/article/illinois-5essentials-survey-questions).

If you do not want your child to participate, please fill out the bottom portion of this linked document and ask your child to return this sheet to their teacher. You can also come to the front office to receive and sign a copy.

Thank you for your cooperation

5 Essentials Survey for Parents

This is a reminder to participate in the 5 Essential Parent Survey before March 13. We guarantee that survey responses will never be connected to your identity or that of your child. School reports will only present aggregated information on how parents and students responded as a whole.

A parent survey report will be generated if at least 20 percent of parents/guardians respond to the survey. While the parent data will not be made public, the parent report will be made available to the Principal, Mr. Ritz, and the Superintendent, Dr. Grens, and will enable them to consider the responses from Devonshire parents/guardians. Your participation in the parent survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement.

These research-based reports will be sent to schools and districts in May and will also be included in the State School Report Card, released statewide in the fall.

Please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ to take the parent survey.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact UChicago Impact Survey Support at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.

Release Time for Religious Instruction/Observance

In Skokie School District 68, one of our core values is to foster a nurturing and culturally responsive learning environment. The purpose of this communication is to notify parents/guardians of State law and Policy 7:80, Release Time for Religious Instruction/Observance, which states that “A student shall be released from school, as an excused absence, because of religious reasons, including to observe a religious holiday, or for religious instruction, or because the student’s religion forbids secular activity on a particular day(s) or time of day.”

If you would like for release time for religious instruction/observance for your student(s), please provide written notice to the Building Principal by completing the following form (or, contacting the Principal) at least five calendar days before the student’s anticipated release and/or absence(s).

Should your student(s) miss class, the Building Principal will notify teachers of the impending absence of your student(s), and teachers will provide the student with an equivalent opportunity to make up any examination, study, or work requirement.

Important: Arrival and Dismissal

Drop off and pick up occur on Kenneth Avenue. Please only stop at the playground entrance closest to Davis. For the safety of our students, please do not double park, do not park on the side of the street with the houses, and stay in a single line. Students will line up according to grade level. Click here to see a map and detailed directions for picking up and dropping off.

Students should be dropped off between 8:30-8:37 a.m. If you arrive after 8:40 a.m., please park and bring your child to the main entrance. Please note that if the weather is bad (under 10 degrees with windchill, rain, or wet/blowing snow), students will come into the school building beginning at 8:30 a.m.

3rd - 5th grade students can walk home or walk to a parent in a parked car, if they have a signed permission slip. If you choose, you may submit this permission slip to your child’s teacher.
