Principal's Message

Dear Highland Families,

We hope you and your children are settling into the time change! Our Hawks continue to grow as learners, show kindness to others, and take meaningful steps toward their goals.

A few minutes of conversation each evening can help your child recognize their progress and feel proud of their effort. Remind them that learning takes practice, mistakes help us grow, and small steps lead to big accomplishments.

Here are five simple ways to start these conversations:

  1. Ask a specific question. Try, “What is something you learned today?” or “What made you curious?”
  2. Invite your child to teach you. Ask them to explain a new idea, share a reading strategy, or show how they solved a problem.
  3. Talk about a challenge. Ask, “What felt tricky today? What did you try, and what could you try next?”
  4. Celebrate small steps. Help them notice progress: “What can you do now that you couldn’t do before?” Recognize their effort, patience, and willingness to keep trying.
  5. Connect learning to everyday life. Read together, use math while cooking, or look for connections to classroom learning during a walk.
Thank you for partnering with us to nurture confident, curious learners. Your encouragement helps our Hawks believe in themselves and keep reaching higher!
